On Food in NYC (so far)

Best Breakfast: Teddy’s. Their Eggs St. Croix were a perfect balance of sweet and salty and the atmosphere is chill. They also have loaded bloody marys that are apparently good (not my thing) and basil lemonade with optional vodka. Too early for me to try, but according to a member of our table, it’s as delicious as it sounds.

Worst Breakfast: Max Brenner. I really wanted to like the food there because the atmosphere and presentation are so adorable, but on both occasions I visited for breakfast I was disappointed by greasy, overly filling food, which is simply unacceptable for their prices. The Bald Man should stick to chocolate.

Best Lunch: Bar 6. A bit pricey, but their curried chicken sandwich is truly heavenly. The spice is balanced by sweet raisins in the mix and a salty homemade pickle on the plate, all of which can be quickly and delicately neutralized by sliced cumber served on the side. I went again for a sausage sandwich dinner, which was also delightful. These people know how food works.

Worst Lunch: Honestly, I haven’t had anything bad enough to trash for lunch. Mostly because I’ve been skipping that meal lately.

Best Dinner: Out of all of the fancy (mostly Italian) dinners I’ve had in the city this month, I think my favorite was a good ol’ fashioned burger at Lodge. It wasn’t spectacular, but it was solidly good, and the fries were yummy, too — even if they were an extra $6. Actually, any meal is pretty great there. They have a rustic chic (read: hipster) atmosphere, decent service, and a reasonably priced American menu.

Worst Dinner: Acqua Santa. Without asking the price, I jumped on the opportunity to try one of the specials of the evening: strawberry risotto. Turned out to be a complete flop. Just one big mess of strawberry and cheese with no real direction or care. Then I got the bill: $18, which is just plain unjustifiable. I also witnessed the owner be a real asshole to one of the waitresses. A shame, because their garden seating was lovely.

Best Coffee: Sweet Farm, which is exactly as adorable as it looks. Free wi-fi, too.

Worst Coffee: Nowhere! It’s all pretty damn good. Thank God for that.
